As is well known, pure water is difficult to procure in many locations around the world. Most water is contaminated with varying amounts of inorganic and organic impurities that result from sources such as, for example, manmade or natural seeps, ground water contamination, ground water contamination due to chemicals used in the production of hydrocarbons, and chemical and biological contamination. Also, water may be contaminated with a wide variety of substances including, for example, gases such as hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen oxides, oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide; biological contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, molds, fungi, and algae; dissolved inorganic solids such as calcium and magnesium; suspended solids such as colloidal particles, fine particulate solids, and larger particulate solids; and dissolved organic compounds. In addition, the purity of the water itself may be altered by temperature and pressure variations, such as those resulting from climate change, or by changes in the rate of water evaporation.
In order to purify water for consumption or use as a solvent, it is essential that the water be separated from these contaminants, or that the contaminants be removed from the water. A wide variety of processes and devices have been developed to achieve this separation or removal of contaminants from the water. For example, reverse osmosis systems typically employ a membrane that selectively rejects the water contaminants while allowing pure water to pass through. However, while such systems provide clean water for consumption or use be359ba680
